Diosdado Macapagal Bridge Now Open to the Public

In the past 50 years, only one bridge connected Butuan to the different places in Mindanao - the Magsaysay Bridge.  Population growth, urbanization and the increase of tourist arrivals in the city prompted the Butuan City Government to appeal to the national government to provide an alternate bridge to decongest traffic in the city proper.Through the efforts of City Mayor Democrito D. Plaza II and with the support of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, the Diosdado Macapagal Bridge, the longest bridge in Mindanao, costing P2.15 Billion, is now open for public use, granting easy and convenient access to people, goods and services in the Northeastern part of Mindanao.

The bridge is expected to spur development in Butuan City and its nearby provinces.

The Diosdado Macapagal Bridge which is 3 kilometers upstream of the old Magsaysay Bridge provides an alternate route across the Agusan River to connect the Philippine-Japan Friendship Highway (Surigao-Agusan-Davao Road) and the Butuan City-Cagayan-Iligan Road.  Further, it facilitates the rehabilitation and strengthening of the more than 50 year-old Magsaysay Bridge which bears the brunt of the traffic due to the fast urbanization of Butuan City.

City Government Launches ART Demo Project

Opening the portals to boundless opportunities for Butuanons and partners, the Agusan River Tourism Demonstration (ART Demo) Project was launched on November 27, 2007.The ART Demo project is a multi-sectoral convergent undertaking to propel Butuan’s full-scale, livelihood-based tourism industry. Showing full support to the project were hundreds of representatives from the academe, line agencies, city government offices, artist group, private entrepreneurs and barangay leaders.

The stakeholders take their oath in support to the ART Demo Project.

The ART Demo has four windows of economic productivity-development of trademark indigenous products from each barangay for livelihood; promotion of historical sites; influencing Butuan’s orderly urbanization, and spurring private sector participation for tourism.

Threading through these four portals is the Agusan River Cruise and livelihood nooks as the crowning demonstration of the promise that is Butuan’s tourism destiny. In the middle part of 2008, the rivercruise is targeted to commence with a developed Banza Historical Village, stalls beside the Diosdado Macapagal Bridge and the transformation of the floodwalls into murals depicting Butuan’s history.

Butuan City Mayor Democrito D. Plaza II calls for support to the project, “We have a great opportunity, right here, right now, but we need partners to make Butuan a tourist destination and economic hub at the same time. Join us in developing Butuan City as one of the prime tourist spots in the Philippines and be part of our unfolding tourism destiny.”

Stakeholders from the business sector, Regional Line Agencies, Academe, Brgy. Captains and Chiefs of Offices receive their certificate of appointment from the ART Demo Core Management Group Chair City Mayor Democrito D. Plaza II.

PRC Asst. Commissioner Aristogerson T. Gesmundo and  Vice Mayor Dino Claudio M. Sanchez at the inauguration of the PRC Filed Office in Butuan City. Seen in the background are City Administrator Webb L. Racaza, City Engineer Enily Gayon, and PRC Cagayan Director Estrella Malik.

After almost a year of negotiations, the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) Butuan City Field Office now located at the former City Health Office, City Hall Grounds was inaugurated on May 3, 2007.

The imperative need for a PRC Field Office arose when a client during the People’s Day of the City Mayor asked for boat fare from the Mayor for him to go to Manila to take his exam at the Professional Regulations Commission Central Office.

Hon. Dino Claudio M. Sanchez turns over the fax machine and other equipment donated by the members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod to Asst. Comm. Aristogerson T. Gesmundo.

Mayor Democrito D. Plaza II then realized how hard and expensive it is for professionals to renew their license or for fresh graduates to take their board examinations if the nearest PRC office is in Cagayan de Oro City. He then wrote PRC Chairperson Dr. Leonor Tripon-Rosero to put up a PRC Field Office in Butuan City.Last May 3, 2007, the office space for the PRC field office was turned-over along with the air conditioning units given to the office to Atty. Aristogerson T. Gesmundo, Asst. Commissioner of PRC and Dir. Estrella Malik, PRC Cagayan de Oro City Director, for the convenience of the personnel and the applicants.Councilors Randolph B. Plaza, Dino Claudio M. Sanchez and Lope A. Buñol and Rodrigo Dayaday also helped for the immediate operation of the said office by giving steel cabinet, fax machine, monoblock chairs and office tables.

New Houses Built for Butuan City

Our City Mayor’s strong pursuance in building a slum-free Butuan propelled the City Housing and Development Office to continually come up with strategic solutions to the priority housing needs of the people. The year saw the smooth and facilitated resettlement of almost 300 families to different relocation sites all over Butuan through 8 program menu, namely: CMP, Glad, NHA Joint Venture, DPS, Balangayan Butuan, CIGLA regular, CIGLA organized, National Houses Mortgage Corporation and BBEP.The City Shelter Program continues to attract homeowners associations with more than 10 communities organized this year, towards progressive and healthy communities.Communities served also receive site development assistance in survey works, road development, draining systems and land filling that would have cost them much more if done without City Government assistance. Also notable is the opening of Block Tiendas and Terminal Bay at Barangay Pagatpatan Relocation Site that will adequately cater to each family’s daily needs, and signals the wide-scale implementation of the livelihood component of our holistic Shelter Program.Cost recovery collection efficiency continues to go up with almost P5M in collections yearly.

Having outsourced most of the materials for house construction, with the beginning of the Kadiyawan house build totaling 30 for this year, indicators for support from the various sectors for this city-led shelter effort are looking up for more promising potentials in the upcoming years.
